Interview with Rineke de Jong; Illustrator and Art- Painter

Since I was a little child I made drawings, and I painted. Art has always been a passion of mine. In my work I am using my imagination, my fantasy. This is my unique and own signature. I seek the beauty in people and not the ugliness. For me creating works of art is a form of love, and that is wonderful.

I was trained and graduated as a fashion designer in Amsterdam and worked a couple of years in the fashion industry as a designer, but I preferred to be an art painter. I followed art classes with Humphrey Bennett at De Gooise Academie in Laren, The Netherlands. Meanwhile I worked as a technical designer, I did public relations for a bank and worked as a secretary and management assistent. Furthermore I did (and still do) a lot of self study about acrylic and oilpainting with much interest in the old techniques from and recipes of the old masters. Now, for many years already, I give art classes myself.

My inspiration and how I realize my paintings and drawings

People, all living things, the market, the things around you, a phrase from a story, those are my inspirations. And that is how my mythological paintings and still lifes, or small gadgets, such as jewelery, are born. Old masters like Gustav Klimt, the Pre-Raphaelites, Laurens Alma Tadema, but also the Dutch and Flemish masters. I can spend hours watching their work, there is so much to learn from them. I mainly work with live models. My mythological paintings are a combination of abstract and realism, my still lifes are realistic. When I work in big formats I love to start first in an orgy of colors. In this color chaos my figures arise, then calmness again returns. For my still lifes I use the death paint technique, also called Verdaccio.

“Rineke de Jong’s paintings are a fusion of pure painting and concrete figuration.

The abstract phase is, purely intuitive, often painted hastily, resulting in a chaotic and evocative space. Figures arise amongst the chaos of color, which makes her painting complete. Her quest is exploring the compromise between abstract and figurative art. She also works in the old academic art of oilpainting. Mythology is often the source of inspiration. She tries to achieve divinity and humanity in her paintings.

Rineke de Jong has often exhibitions in The Netherlands and abroad, such as in France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Denmark, etc., and was awarded many times. She was invited and was present with her works of art at the Florence Biennale 2009.”
